The Information You Need To Be Competitive

Here, we provide answers to some of the more commonly-asked questions we've received. If you have any questions that are not listed here, please feel free to contact us at 2009@stepnationals.com.

Who can compete for the national step championship?

  • Graduate and undergraduate chapters that are members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

  • Your chapter and step team members must be in good standing with the NPHC, your national headquarters and your college or university

  • Your chapter or step team members cannot be banned, expelled, revoked, or suspended

Why not a step region format?

Example: If XZY sorority (Beta chapter) wins the West Region and XZY sorority (Gamma chapter) wins the South Region, this format would pit two chapters of the same organization competing against each other. This type of step competition occurs at their sorority national convention and regional meetings. We want the best from each fraternity and sorority.

Why not mixed teams?

Example: The NFL does not allow its teams to borrow players from the NCAA college teams to compete and the NCAA college teams cannot borrow players from the NFL. This is for the national step championship. (This is the major league for steppers). We encourage teams that are not part of a chapter to become members of an active chapter that is in good standing with NPHC and your national headquarters.

If your step team theme includes (props) male/female counterparts, this is acceptable. (No children or animals)

How do we select best step teams?

Each team must submit a DVD/VHS tape of their team performance and that performance will be judged by the five-member competition committee. Our point system gives step teams the opportunity to compete in annual step shows across the nation for points and those points along with your taped performance will be reviewed by the competition committee.

What's involved in the verification / invitation process?

Once the competition committee makes its team selections, StepNationals will contact the national headquarters and/or college or university of each selected fraternity/sorority for their chapter status. Upon verification / clearance, StepNationals will extend a formal invitation to the selected teams. There will also be a first runner-up invitation in play in the event that the selected team cannot compete for some reason. In this case, the first runner-up step team will be invited to represent its organization.

How can we earn more points in the future?

Encourage step show promoters to become part of the national circuit and have them to contact us for more information.
